It does not indicate whether ‘multiple discrimination’ should be understood as representing ‘additive’, ‘intersectional’ or ‘cumulative’ discrimination. Even if it had, the foregoing discussion of the problems with conceptualizing discrimination on multiple grounds indicates that these problems cannot be solved simply by choosing one or the other variation of the concept. In the next part, I consider how to shift the focus from accurately representing complex identity categories to the relations and processes that create inequality and the extent to which doing so moves the discourse of multiple discrimination beyond being a mere exhortation to offering a practical and effective alternative to the single-axis framework that has shaped anti-discrimination legal doctrine.

Although age has rarely figured in anti-essentialist feminist critiques or in intersectionality scholarship, I will show how these critiques are equally applicable to discrimination based on age together with other grounds. I will argue that neither anti-essentialist feminist critiques nor ‘intersectionality’ have been particularly helpful in providing analytical tools for dealing with discrimination on multiple grounds within the current framework of European and American anti-discrimination law, and that the concept of ‘multiple discrimination’ by itself contributes nothing new to resolve this problem.
